Underwood Lions Ice Racing

We had an excellent day of racing.  The wind once again played into the conditions on the track, completely polishing the track and making it extremely slippery.  The conditions allowed for the Wrecker crew to have some business, but they were not overworked.  The racers displayed an excellent example of true competition, especially in the A Feature where the finish was so close they had to call a tie for first place. 

We have definitely seen an international flair at the race track this year.  We have had spectators here from Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and France.  Today Manuela, a foreign exchange student from Underwood High School came to the track.  Manuela is from France.  She rode with Jim Johansen in two races.  She states that it was very exciting.  She did say that the second race (the Clock Race) was the best.  There were a lot more cars and it was more exciting, there were people racing very close to the car and changing positions.  You couldn't just stay in one groove.  Manuela also tried her hand at driving the race car on the track after the races were completed.  She said it was a lot of fun, it took her a little bit to get comfortable, but then it was great.  Her true assessment:  driving was fun, but spinning out was more fun (and a note from the Johansen's � not getting stuck in the snow bank was great!).

Underwood Lions Ice Racing

It was a beautiful day for racing especially after the frigid temperatures of last week.  The track was fast, but the traction definitely changed throughout the day.  Just because you found a groove in one race did not mean it would be there for your next race.  The wind picked up as the day went on, causing snow drifts and completely polishing other areas of the track.  Even with the rapidly changing conditions there were relatively few people who got stuck in the snow banks.    

The Ice Racing committee was in full force helping the flagman monitor the drivers on the corners.  It worked very well having the extra eyes there to help out the flagman.

Underwood Lions Ice Racing

 The first week of Underwood Lions ice racing brought a great turnout even while the Super Bowl parties were going on.  We had 31 drivers in the Big Kids class.  The first week of racing we draw for starting position, next week line up will be determined by point average.  Jon Gutzmer, brought home top honors with 36 points edging out Tom Hecker by one point.  We had 8 drivers in the powder puff class.  Carrie Mull had a clean sweep in the Powder Puff class.  We didn’t have a juniors class race as only 3 Juniors signed up. They may have to talk to their friends to find more drivers.   We had 8 drivers in the kids class. Evan Bohn driving Car # 21 took home first place. It was a little different with 2 Evan Bohn’s in the same race. We had 5 teams for the adult kids race.  Teams consist of three adults; one adult runs the pedals, one runs the steering wheel, and one rides in an opponents’ car to learn the secrets of the other teams.  We look forward to cold weather and many more weekends of racing.  Join us for racing action Sundays at 12:30 pm on Bass Lake in Underwood.  Spectators and Racers welcome for family entertainment.
